Initiated by Ensemble U:, Residentuu:r is a unique creative residency programme, featuring public workshops that have three goals:

  • to develop the ensemble and the audience while focusing a certain topic and composer in the field of contemporary / experimental music.
  • through the public workshops offer a chance for music students, composers, musicians and anyone else interested to educate themselves further.
  • to pave the way for closer cooperation between instrumentalists and composer

Ensemble U: selected Udo Kasemets (1919-2014) posthumously as the composer for 2019. Kasemets was a Canadian-based composer with Estonian roots, and was the most influential figure in experimental music in Toronto from the 1950s to the 1970s.  Although Kasemets is no longer with us, his creative work, ideas and music he left us certainly deserve broader introduction and in-depth study.

In the open lectures / workshops, U: will play excerpts from Estonian composer Udo Kasemets compositions, discuss various types of scores and other aspects related to the works and music in general. The workshops will be held at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

From January to May, four open lectures / workshops will be held, each one led by an invited lecturer on a topic related to Kasemets. All the lecturers are from a different field related to the music to expand the topic from different angles. They are: Jeremy Stachan (Canada), Immo Mihkelson, Kerri Kotta, and Theodore Parker.

The series will be held in cooperation with the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre’s Contemporary Music and Improvisation Centre and is supported by Cultural Endowment of Estonia, Estonian Ministry of Culture and co-funded by Creative Europe.
